The Recovery

If you are like me, you are tired of hearing about the Great Recession. While a large part of our area remains in the doldrums, there are glimmers of hope and a recovery as the economy is moving slowly forward. Options has weathered the storm fairly well, which is a tribute to our leadership, staff, and the perseverance of our  people.

The Best news is Options being selected as the Lead Partner for Best Buy’s Ability Initiative. We have worked very closely with Best Buy and other agencies to develop a coalition to assist Best Buy in hiring people with disabilities as a major part of their work force. Since August 2010, over 40 people have been hired into full time jobs at Best Buy’s distribution center in Shepherdsville. This is just the beginning and as their operation grows, they plan to hire more individuals.

The other good news from Options’ perspective is that things are not as bad as they were in 2009. Compared to 2009, the number of job placements increased by 46% (from 28 to 41). This reflects not only the Best Buy positions but also other employers recognizing the important role people with disabilities can play in their workforce. It also reflects the resilience of our staff and clients to work at finding jobs when opportunities are scarce.

The Day Program has also seen increase in attendance to 12 people a day. We continue to take trips into the community as well as work with people at our site on Castlerock Drive. Unfortunately, we have had to re-institute our Waiting List as we have had more people requesting these services than we can currently take on.

Even with the bad economy, we have managed to have some fun in our social programs. The trip to New York City in late 2009 was a great success. We are planning a trip this fall to the Windy City, Chicago. Our summer picnic and our Christmas Dance were each attended by 90- 100 people. We took several people to the “Shine Formal” at Southeast Christian Church and a group of our deaf clients enjoyed an outing at Churchill Downs.

We are looking forward to more opportunities in 2011, which will allow us to serve more people in our programs.
